ummm, ya. summer '09

most of you know about NC. all in all it was a great time for the family. i got in some fun runs, and managed to go allllll the way to the last night without turning into an A-hole.
sorry about that. things were going well, too.
i just don't know how to let go, relax, 'be', etc.
july saw us staring at the pit in our back yard. for T, that was an all day every day kinda thing, which grew on her. late in july i talked to the developer, and he gave us some good tips, and since then the project has turned a corner in the right direction. photos later.
august. here we are. M uneventfully turned 16. what an interesting 4 days those were (these are, as we are only on day 3). more later.
i am at work now, getting ready to leave. our chronic pt is not doing well again, but his wife said to me, "I can feel him leaving this time". Hurray, end of shift.
off to see the family minus Z. :(

peace, yo.

May ketchup

It IS a veggie, you know!

I am sure that you want to hear all about the exterior renovations happening at our humble abode, but I am not going to talk about them. At least not now.

Last Saturday I snagged Z and B, and the 3 of us drove up to Fairlee, VT for a 1 mile fun run that I found for Z to run in. He has been itching to run one ever since we ran the race at APD last spring. The morning was chilly, and there was some fog around the lake, but it didn't dampen his spirits at all. There were about 100 participants in the Fun Run, and Z finished 4th overall. No official time was kept, but my Timex clocked him at just over 5.5 minutes!!!! I have pictures on the camera which I will upload in the next few days, but here are 2 from the phone: (note: you can spy Z almost in the center in the second shot.)

seems to come in annual cycles

I was browsing online, and searched myself. This blog showed up, so i clicked the link. Luck be a lady, and I was linked to a posting from 21APR07. yep, 2 years ago. the posting was related to a the new picked fence we had to put up, and also mentioned some odd behaviours by our neighbors. hmmmm. seems to be a trend. for those of you who have read this via email, i apologize. for others, here is the most recent activity. we have taken photos, and i will try to post them by the end of the weekend.

Omg. What a joke.
On or about 1 APR we thought we saw CPT Rich, in uniform, draw his weapon on the neighbor's dog. So I called the station (since he drove away too quickly for me to ask him in person), to inquire if he had to file a report, or if the dog was aggressing him, or what. My main concerns were that 1) if he did draw his weapon, I wanted to know if the dog had become aggressive, since he comes to our house on occasion; 2) if he did, and the dog wasn't aggressive, I think that it is wrong, especially if kids see a cop pointing a weapon at a dog unnecessarily; 3) if he didn't draw, then sorry for the call, no harm no foul, I am just a concerned citizen.
WELL....it was the next week that the State showed up (last wed) on a surprise visit, saying that someone had called to report that they thought Tracey had too many kids. Hmmmmmmm.....
Then on thurs, Sharon (the wife) was in her back yard, counting kids' heads as they played. Hmmmmmmmm
Then yesterday, as I am leaving, T sent me a text saying that Sharon had pulled up the borders in the flower gardens and tossed them onto our plants. T was outside in the yard the whole time, and Sharon didn't say anything about it.
So I stopped at the police station on my way home to discuss the issue, and see what they had to say about how it should be handled. We see it as retaliation for having called about the gun (or no gun). The Deputy Chief told me that I should try to talk to CPT Rich in person, either at home or at the station while he is on duty. Our schedules match for the next week, so I didn't want to wait that long to see him when I wasn't working.
SO....when I first got home, they weren't. After a while, I notice that they had come home, so I went over and rang their doorbell. While waiting for them to answer, I respectfully stepped off of their stoop and onto their paved sidewalk.
She came to the door and stood half in, half out. She said something like, "I am not surprised to see you here. What can I do for you?"
I replied, calmly, "I want to talk to you about the flower beds that you disrupted."
"The borders are on our property, and I am tired of them creeping further in, so I decided to pull them up." (Mind you, inanimate objects can't creep. They were simply leaning from the snow, and hadn't been pushed back in yet).
I said to her, "why, as an adult, didn't you just ask us to please move them. We would have gladly done so. In fact, we had talked about it this weekend, but it was too cold to work outside."
Then she said, "I am sure that you would have gotten to it. I'll bet."
It was at this point that things took a turn for the worse.....
HE came flying down the stairs (they have a house like ours in Essex) and rushed right to me, his gut touching mine. He pointed his finger in my face and told me, "you need to turn yourself around and get off of my property right now, or you will be seriously sorry!"
Wow.
So, calmly, and in a non-threatening tone, I said, "sir, I won't turn around, but I will get off of your property."
"Why won't you turn around?!" he queried.
"Sir, I won't turn around because I don't trust you", came my peaceful reply as I backed down his walkway.
Still with his finger at my chest and nearly frothing at the mouth, he said, "well, now you have a reason not to trust me! Where do you get off calling my boss and telling lies about me!?"
Still backing....."Sir, I didn't lie. I called to question what I saw and to voice concerns about..."
"YOU LIED."
"Sir, I didn't lie. I reported what I thought I saw. If it isn't what was happening, then I am sorry. I meant no harm, I was just concerned."
"YOU LIED. Do you have any idea what this means!? You have just made a mistake that could prove to be a very expensive lesson for you. Very expensive."
(Mind you, we still hadn't worked out the garden issue, which is why I went there in the first place, at the suggestion of this guys BOSS....) Meanwhile, T had come out onto our stoop when she heard him start to shout. As he was backing me down the walk, she called Hartford PD and requested a cruiser.
I said to CPT Rich, "I understand that you are upset, but I don't think that I did anything wrong by calling in a concern."
"YOU DID, and you LIED. What would happen if I called your boss and told them that you were a RAVING LUNATIC??"
"Well", said I, "I would probably get called into their office for a discussion, plead my case that I am not a lunatic, and move on with my day. I am sorry for the misunderstanding, and I meant no harm to you by it."
"I better not see you or any of your family set foot on my property for ANY reason, EVER again, or you will be very sorry."
Trying desperately to hold my tongue, I simply said, "we have four neighbors that surround us, and I wonder why you are the only ones that we have troubles with. I just don't understand."
Sharon chimed in with, "Yea, I WONDER why that is."
I said, "me, too. It doesn't make sense. We will take care of the flowers."
"The boundary is 6 inches out from the fence posts", Sharon informed me.
Starting to lose it, I said, "from which edge? They aren't in a line, and some of them are leaning over a bit, so I just want to be...."
"Come on, Sharon, let's go inside. Let's go, now!", CPT Rich ordered.
She looked down at my feet, which for most of this had been firmly planted in the cul de sac, off of their pavement by about a foot, and said, "I guess you are far enough off. But watch yourself!"
Wtf? Yep.
So by now T had ALMOST gotten through to the cops (good thing no one was in dire need of a cop!!), and they said that they would send a cruiser.
Ten mins later (this is when I sent you the text) one showed up. He is ALSO CPT RICH, so right away I know that we are screwed.
He listened, offered some sympathetic nods, and said that we did the right thing buy involving the Deputy Chief, and that any officer there would have also suggested that I go in person to try to work this out. We showed him the 'damage', and he said that he would now go next door to hear their side of the story, and further suggested that I talk to the D/C tomorrow as well.
About 20 mins later he came back over, and said that the Rich's were "very calm and cooperative" about the matter, and promised to leave us alone and not stir things up. I had offered that if Cpt Rich (the neighbor) wanted to have a powwow about my phone call, that I was perfectly willing to do it in a civilized manner, but that I didn't need his belly against mine with his finger in my face to do it. The responding CPT Rich said that my neighbor "wasn't ready to discuss" it with me yet, and that it would be some time, if ever. I told him that I understand and have no trouble with that, I just want the animocity toward my wife and the flowers to stop, that it was becoming increasingly uncomfortable to be outside in our own yard.
The neighbors' comments were mostly along the lines of 'agree to disagree' and that some neighbors just can't get along. We don’t know what it is that we DID in the first place.
I told the responding CPT that I felt 'funny' reporting this, but that I don't want it to culminate with a horrific event one day, and then have someone say, "well, we don't have any reports that this sort of thing has been happening for years". Now it has been reported, and a trail exists.
My biggest problem with this is the impact that it has on Tracey. She toiled long and hard on those gardens, and invested a lot of money into making them pretty. She loves them. She gets very excited with they start to grow and blossom. Now we have to tear them all up. It isn't as if we planted them at night and the neighbors got angry. THAT I could understand. But they have been there for going on the FIFTH spring! And they watched us plant, and commented on the beauty of the flowers, etc.
Now this.

Ain't that the truth?

Boy the way Glen Miller played
Songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us we had it made,
Those were the days.

And you knew who you were then,
Girls were girls and men were men,
Mister we could use a man Like Herbert Hoover again.
Didn't need no welfare state,
Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee our old LaSalle ran great.
Those were the days.

Observations about the news....

Some of the ICU rooms have TV's, and some of them are tuned to CNN or Fox. Either way, I just got to see "The Anoited One" deliver his speech. Now, I am no PoliSci major, nor have I been really all that in tune with politics over the past 40 years, but here is a question....

If the Steelers were facing the Cowboys in the super bowl, and found themselves overall ahead but in a struggle for yardage late in the 3rd quarter, would the Steeler's coach even DREAM of handing over his playbook to the Cowboys??????

Note: I am not a football coach, armchair or otherwise. I do not endorse football, nor am I endorsed BY football. I do, however, own a football. I also own a set of BDU's and ACU's, and am thus more qualified to understand the military half of the analogy than the football half, but I think that I got it right........

Heck, Bryce is only 3 (well, ALMOST), and when he plays hide and seek, he doesn't tell the seeker where he is going to hide and when. HE GETS IT.....why doesn't our President???
Lemme know......

Running in the dark

Thanks to T, last night I was able to run the trail from Wilder to Montshire Museum in back. I used my larger headlamp, but it seems to eat batteries like I eat chips and dip. I will have to switch to my little micro light next time and see how it goes.

The trail was completely snow covered, except for where it was ICE covered. Again, thanks to T I was able to maintain my footing with ease. Actually, thanks goes to Weeb, too, for getting me the fancy blue shoes last year for Christmas. The two together worked great on the trail.

Even though it seemed as if I were making good time while running, my overall time on course was 40 minutes, which puts me at a terrible 12 plus minute mile average! So it was dark, so it was cold, so i had to step gingerly so as not to turn an ankle (or worse) on the frozen, pothole filled trail....so?

I am acutally very happy with the results, and the fronts of my legs are 'feelin the burn' today. Once again, thanks, T!!!! Love ya, +1.....me

The wee smalls, again

My rookie-ness caught up with me again this afternoon, as I allowed B to sleep for a few hours. He just looked so darn cute and peaceful. The house was quite, and T and I were downstairs trying to make a dent in the pictures. T was on a tear to get some frames up, and I was plodding along, trying to help. She managed to get together more than 30 pictures for some frames, and still has more left over. Although I didn't really have a problem with the walls being bare, the frame set in the hallway does add to the decore. I will be sure to let T know that I think it looks great!
The snow continues to fall over night, and I will be out there in the driveway in about an hour and a half, clearing it for the daycare. I enjoy the time outside, so I am certainly not complaining about it. The weather looks like it will hold for the morning, too, so I think that I will try to run the Hazen Trail in Wilder-Norwich. It will be a great chance to put my spikey things to the test. I really hope that a bunch of people snowshoed the trail over the weekend so that it is runnable without snowshoes.
I think that I will take B and Z sledding in Hanover again, depending on how things go. Mebbe just Z, or mebbe just B. Mebbe just me! lol...
Oh, right. Back to the rookie thing.... well, as it ended up, B didn't fall asleep until around 1 am. Yep. No one to blame but me, i guess. I am going to stop looking to find fault in others and simply accept all responsibility and blame for things that don't quite go the way i wished, hoped, or intended. Seems to be easier for me that way. At least I won't go around pointing fingers, right? We'll see, and revisit the concept later.
In two days I start my career at the Veteran's Administration Hospital here in White River Junction, VT. Should be a good step in the continuation of my nursing career. I will be in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Stay toooooned to see how things play out.
Alright, my first alarm just sounded, so I think that I should get ready to go outside. Well, it is only 4am, so perhaps I will wait a little. Thank you for reading this pretty boring post. But then, it is all relative.....
OH! if you haven't done it yet, be sure to play the little video in the post below. Thx.

Snow, how was your day?

I was reading a blog from a runner in FL, and this was on one of his postings. Snowing here today, about 4 inches so far, so I thought it was rather fitting. Never mind. whatever.

Mr. Tooooter.

Yep. B is tooting next to me. Luckily for me, though, he is on T's side of the bed! SSSHHHhhhhhh...
If you hoped that this would be some profound first posting of the new year, you will be sadly disappointed here. No words of wisdom to depart, etc. Just a post.
Have you seen Wall-E? Be sure to watch the short film about Burn-E. AFTER you watch the feature, though. I will make much more sense, and will be funnier. Who doesn't want funnier?
Sadly, I have been playing with the Wii. I find the basic golf game to be quite interesting. No, I don't put the golf club attachments on. Silly Rabbit. Come to find out, one of my cousins plays Wii quite often, and has gotten her mother hooked on bowling over new year's eve. HA! very fun. the concept, at least.
Running? nah. not much. haven't gone since the week after thanksgiving, then i went yesterday on my way home from work. well, more accurately, i ran HOME from WORK. 5.5 miles, but it took me an ETERNITY. 59:39. Cold, too. when i got home, the thermometer read 12. it was very windy out there, so i imagine that the wind-chill, if you subscribe to such things, was about 0. Brisk.
Wondering if i should take this blog to a new direction. Dunno where. Short stories? Recipies? Nah. just meaderings like this will be fun enough.
Will be posting links to my running (racing) goals for the summer, though. There are a few that I want to participate in. I darenot say 'race', since I am not really competitive, but i do like to be involved. speaking of, i have been tossing around the idea of trying to get involved with Team In Training, a group that races and raises monies to fund leukemia research. thing is, though, there are no local chapters. closest one is in Burlington, VT. just a bit too far. oh well. and NO, i am not interested in starting one here in the Upper Valley.
Alright, you are probably as tired of reading this as I am of writing this, and besides, Ray is here to get Liz.
Peace, YO!
